A teenager growing up in the Chicago suburbs just trying to get his music heard, Jonny Polonsky would stand outside venues where his idols were playing gigs and hand out his demos on homemade cassette tapes under the name “The Amazing Jonny Polonsky.” His break finally acme in the mid-‘90s when one of his DIY cassette demos landed in the hands of Black Francis from the Pixies – who immediately took him under his wing, leading to a major record deal with Rick Rubin (then of American Recordings). Polonsky’s debut Hi My Name is Jonny was released to glowing reviews from the New York Times to MTV to publications across the globe. Jonny and his touring band spent 12 weeks on tour opening for The Pixies, leading into a 3-week stint on the Lollapalooza ’96 tour alongside artists including The Ramones, Devo, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, The Melvins, Metallica, Cheap Trick, Violent Femmes, Wu Tang Clan, Rancid, Steve Earle and Ben Folds Five.
